Associate Professor Walt Jacobs was chairperson of the Department of African American & African Studies at the University of Minnesota from July of 2007 through June of 2012. He received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in sociology from Indiana University. He is passionate about undergraduate education, in terms of teaching (offering two new CLA courses), research (authoring a book on undergraduate media literacy, and co-editing an anthology on educational environments), and service (such as 2006-2012 membership on the U of M’s Council on Liberal Education, which implemented new university-wide requirements for undergraduates). His current research explores personal and social possibilities of undergraduate students’ generation of creative digital nonfiction.
